Burnt Store Road Expansion
The Burnt Store Road expansion in Cape Coral is a major infrastructure project aimed at easing congestion and supporting rapid growth in the northwest corridor. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has approved plans to widen the road from two to four lanes, with future expansion to six lanes.

Burnt Store Road Project Scope and Design
- Segment: From Van Buren Parkway to the Charlotte County Line
- Current Status: FDOT granted Location and Design Concept Acceptance on August 5, 2025.
- Planned Improvements:
- Widening from a two-lane undivided to a four-lane divided roadway
- Expandable to six lanes in the future
- Two 11-foot travel lanes in each direction
- 40-foot grassed median
- 10-foot shared-use paths on both sides for pedestrians and cyclists
- Replacement of the southbound bridge over Gator Slough Canal
Why the Expansion Is Needed
- Population Growth: Northwest Cape Coral is one of the fastest-growing areas in Southwest Florida.
- Traffic Congestion: The current two-lane road is insufficient to handle the volume of commuters, especially with developments like Hudson Creek and other residential projects along the corridor.
- Connectivity: The expansion aims to improve access between Cape Coral and Charlotte County, facilitating smoother regional traffic flow.
Burnt Store Road District Plan
- Vision Plan: Cape Coral’s Development Services created a land use vision for the corridor in 2021, positioning it as a gateway to the northwest Cape.
- Ongoing Discussions: The City Council is still debating which parcels to include in the Burnt Store Road District Plan, with concerns about balancing development and conservation.
Environmental Considerations
- Yucca Pens Unit: Located near the corridor, this conservation area has prompted calls for careful planning to avoid ecological disruption.
- Resident Advocacy: Local groups have urged Lee County to prioritize this expansion over other discretionary projects due to its regional importance.
